Tax Extenders Legislation: If or When?

Dawn Levy-O'DonnellBlog

John Thune (R- SD) is optimistic about getting extenders done in the first quarter this year. I like it when Thune is optimistic. He is a good barometer of legislative movement and priorities.

Many tax provisions have expired and need to be made retroactive.  Senate Republicans want to make it as easy as possible and give some certainty to groups that rely on these provisions as part of their tax planning.

It seems to be looking less likely that the Extenders packages introduced By SFC Republican members will hitch its wagon to the CR star at January’s end.

It will get done by attaching it to another vehicle, according to Thune, who sees interest for democrats and republicans in passing early.

Senate Finance Committee Chair Orrin G. Hatch, (R-UT), is fine to add extenders to the Govt funding bill, but is not married to that vehicle.

The extenders bill includes extensions for tax credits under section 48 for geothermal heat pumps, fuel cell property, combined heat and power system property, and small wind turbines. It also includes an extension of 179D and electric 2 and 3 wheeled- vehicles, among other expiring or expired tax credits.

Our advice: If you care about any one of these provisions be sure to let your delegation in Congress (both house and Senate) know as soon as possible.
